The sheiling

A walk up the Main Street.

Well folks we are nearly at the end. In this section we will have a look at the area around the car park entrance, The Deli Shp and will finish at the Old Sheiling Pub.

Deli il Cardo Deli Shop

Next up we the popular Deli il Cardo deli shop. For more details on what Deli il Cardo has to offer visit their web site

In the 1920s this was the shop of local cobbler James Yuill and in the 1950s a jewellers. More recently it’s been the location of the Tradewinds Coffee shop and Iona's Tearoom.

However it’s probably most remembered as the The Jacobite Tearoom. The Jacobite was open in 1973 by Betty Bowie and partners Margaret and Frank Ingles. Margaret and Frank had previously owned the Green Shutters for a while. It was called the Jacobite because of Betty's interest in Scottish history Betty did all the baking in the back shop. They were well known for their cakes particularly meringues and freshly made pancakes.

The sign of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Battle of Culloden was painted by Bettys daughter Carolynn, better known as Mazda, and her boyfriend and later husband Robert Munn. They were both at the Glasgow School of Art at the time and were asked to paint the sign during our summer break. Mazda kindly supplied us with this fantastic photo of the painting which was taken by her prior to it being attached to the outside wall.

Downtown Largs

largs main street
largs main street
Thanks to the power of Google Map we can see how this part of Largs was in 2008.
Above is view of Barbeque Kings and the New Jade from 2008. Below the same location as Cairneys Hardware Store. This photo was taken in 1982 by local man Eddie Dowds.
If Largs was located in the USA this area would be called Downtown Largs. It is the only place in Largs where you can pop in your dry cleaning, have a quick Indian lunch, then grab a hair cut and pick up your evening Chinese meal all at the same time. Sadly this part of largs is looking a bit the worst for wear due to a number of shop outlets being empty.

When Silvanos is located was in the past The Snack Basket, Francos Fish and Chicken Bar. Now empty. Next door was in 1991 The Job centre and then Carusel Crafts.

Further up we have a Gents hairdressers from 1998 which is now Ali Barbers. Next door was Interports, empty for long while and now Nico's pizzeria.

The Chinese Carry Out New Jade was once Turana-take-away-food and next door used to be The Three in one take away before it was Barbeque Kings. Prior to these businesses it was the location of Cairneys Hardware shop.

The last of the shops on this side of the Main Street was in 1991 NAP estate agents. By 1997 My pets and from 2009 Quickclean Dry Cleaners

And finally ... The Sheiling Pub

The sheilling
largs 1857 map
Where the Sheling Pub was located used to be the site of the Glasgow Hotel which dates back to the 1850s. The 1856 map on the top left indicates where this hotel was located, with its adjoining gardens at the corner of Main Street and Irvine Road. Later in 1897 the Spencer building, containing the flats as we know them today, was constructed and the Glasgow Hotel became the Spencer Bar. Later it became the Sheiling. This popular local watering hole closed for the last time in 2010.

The pub was then purchased by Rodger Property. They started to refurbish the site including full re-wiring, re-plumbing, new glazing and frontage upgrade, as well as dry lining and insulation work to the walls and ceiling. This was done to make the property more attractive to future tenants. A licence to allow the serving of bar meals and the running of a restaurant was obtained. It was then announced that the site would re-open as The First and Last bar and restaurant. However by May 2019 the new tenants had backed out of this plan. Today the owners are still looking for new tenants.

The End

Well we got there in the end. We hope you have enjoyed this wee guide up the Main Street. Check back in a few months for our next guide through Largs. We are currently working on a Guide starting from Bath Street taking us all the way out to the Pencil.
