Well folks we are nearly at the end. In this section we will have a look at the area around the car park entrance, The Deli Shp and will finish at the Old Sheiling Pub.
In the 1920s this was the shop of local cobbler James Yuill and in the 1950s a jewellers. More recently it’s been the location of the Tradewinds Coffee shop and Iona's Tearoom.
However it’s probably most remembered as the The Jacobite Tearoom. The Jacobite was open in 1973 by Betty Bowie and partners Margaret and Frank Ingles. Margaret and Frank had previously owned the Green Shutters for a while. It was called the Jacobite because of Betty's interest in Scottish history Betty did all the baking in the back shop. They were well known for their cakes particularly meringues and freshly made pancakes. The sign of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Battle of Culloden was painted by Bettys daughter Carolynn, better known as Mazda, and her boyfriend and later husband Robert Munn. They were both at the Glasgow School of Art at the time and were asked to paint the sign during our summer break. Mazda kindly supplied us with this fantastic photo of the painting which was taken by her prior to it being attached to the outside wall.
When Silvanos is located was in the past The Snack Basket, Francos Fish and Chicken Bar. Now empty. Next door was in 1991 The Job centre and then Carusel Crafts.
Further up we have a Gents hairdressers from 1998 which is now Ali Barbers. Next door was Interports, empty for long while and now Nico's pizzeria. The Chinese Carry Out New Jade was once Turana-take-away-food and next door used to be The Three in one take away before it was Barbeque Kings. Prior to these businesses it was the location of Cairneys Hardware shop.
The last of the shops on this side of the Main Street was in 1991 NAP estate agents. By 1997 My pets and from 2009 Quickclean Dry Cleaners
The pub was then purchased by Rodger Property. They started to refurbish the site including full re-wiring, re-plumbing, new glazing and frontage upgrade, as well as dry lining and insulation work to the walls and ceiling. This was done to make the property more attractive to future tenants. A licence to allow the serving of bar meals and the running of a restaurant was obtained. It was then announced that the site would re-open as The First and Last bar and restaurant. However by May 2019 the new tenants had backed out of this plan. Today the owners are still looking for new tenants.
